ABOUT THE COMPANY

Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company is a 2022 NDP Grant Awardee. Support was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to address continued sustainability needs during COVID-19 and in support of MESTIZX.

Yjastros is the dance company in residence in the University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company was founded in 1999 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the goal of blending traditional flamenco with contemporary influences. The company was established by Artistic Director Joaquín Encinias, who sought to create a space for flamenco that honored its roots while exploring new artistic avenues.

Yjastros is known for its dedication to preserving the authenticity of flamenco while incorporating elements of American culture, making it unique in the dance world. The company has performed extensively across the United States and internationally, earning acclaim for its innovative choreography and commitment to the art form.

Throughout its history, Yjastros has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including musicians and dancers from various backgrounds, enhancing the richness of its performances. The company also focuses on education and outreach, aiming to promote an understanding and appreciation of flamenco through workshops, classes, and community engagement.

Yjastros continues to be a vital force in the flamenco scene, contributing to the evolution of the dance while honoring its traditions. Its work emphasizes both the beauty of flamenco and its capacity for innovation, bridging cultural divides and enriching the arts landscape.
